Authentic Bulgarian folk musical string instrument with a deep soft timbre, strong, resounding. Tune - E, H, G and D. It is most characteristic for the Pirin and Thracian folk music regions thus two variations exist – Pirin (4 and 6 strings) and Thracian (8 strings). The body of the tambura is scooped from a whole tree trunk and thus in some areas of Bulgaria it is called kopanka (scooped). It is played solo as well as accompaniment to folk songs. The upper plank of the tambura must be of spruce or fir and wood pores should be less than 1-2 mm.
